Thermistors are a type of semiconductor. What differentiates a thermistor from other semiconductors is the device’s ability to operate in significantly lower resistances. The material housing a thermistor is the biggest determining factor for the relationship between temperature and resistance. Thermistors are often constructed with metallic oxides, stabilizers, and binders. The materials are pressed into wafers before being formed to the proper chip size. If not cut to chip sizes, a thermistor is left in disc form or converted to another shape.
Where does the term thermistor come from? The term is derived from the fact that the device is a thermally sensitive resistor. The term thermistor refers to generalize device, so it is important to recognize that different thermistor styles, types, and sizes function differently. You must use the right thermistor for your specific application.
What configurations are thermistors available in?There are many configurations that designers and engineers use.
